THE HISTORY OF SUNNY HILL RESORT
From a Catskills Farm to a Family Tradition
Sunny Hill’s story is one of family, hard work, and a deep love for the Catskill Mountains. What began as a small farm in the early 20th century has grown into one of the region’s most beloved family resorts—welcoming generations of guests who return year after year.

The Early Days
In 1920, Peter and Gurine Nicholsen purchased a 110-acre farm in Greenville, New York, naming it Sunny Hill. Like many families of the time, they worked the land and welcomed visitors seeking fresh air, simple hospitality, and the natural beauty of the Catskills. Guests stayed in the family home, shared meals, and became part of daily life on the farm.

Growing Into a Resort
As interest grew, so did Sunny Hill. Over the decades, the Nicholsen family expanded the property, adding guest accommodations, recreational activities, and Lake Loree. What started as a few visitors evolved into a full family resort, built on personal service, community, and the idea that vacations should feel like coming home.
